Stormchasing in the USA – The Good, The Bad, and The Not-So-Pretty bits……

10th January 2012 Everywhere in the world has its good, its bad and its ugly, and this is a matter of perception (yours, his, hers and mine) – in fact you may disagree with me, or I may even change my mind……or we may never agree…which smells worse?….dead-skunk-in-the-middle-of-the-road OR having to follow a Ford Festiva on a hot summer’s night with its underbelly painted in dead kangaroo guts for 150kms…..this argument kept us amused for approximately 18 states and 30,000kms (19,000 miles) stormchasing and touring in the US in 2011. Still have no idea who won!

In 2011, we explored the roads, the food and the states in more detail than the previous 2 years…immersing ourselves further into the culture, and being fascinated, and occasionally horrified, by our observations……

The Good…

Mansfield, AR: spicy deep fried chicken at the Shell gas station…….

Everywhere – if you venture across the road, drivers will actually stop in the middle of the road and wait for you to cross, even if you haven’t got to their side yet…….

Mena, AR: True North Cafe – great food and real capuccino!!!!

Ottawa, KS: Burger King…9/10!!!!!

Chevy Traverse!!!

Polite American manners

Muenster, TX Exxon gas station ‘Carmel Rage’ slice

In the middle of nowhere just north of the Red River near Idabel at a Choctaw Indian Trading Post (Conoco gas station)

Lookout with 360 degree view – up a logging track west of Broken Bow, OK – Rte 3 near the Golden turnoff!!

Murfreesboro is just beautiful!!

Cajun chicken and biscuits in Texas & Mississippi

Capucchino from Conoco on I35/Rte 68 at Ottawa

Toilets at the same place as above!

Excellent service at the Butte, NE Post Office

Food store in Butte, NE for their help finding (and emptying) boxes to pack stuff in to send back to Australia

Beds at Comfort Inns everywhere are the most comfortable of all the chains

Supermarket checkout in Valentine, NE (IGA) – young teenager offering plastic or paper sacks (bags), then offering to carry the bottles of coke to the car

Gas station in Newcastle, WY – warm, spotless, incredibly friendly staff

The Weather Channel

The Bad…

stormchasing in the Missouri forests after dark & finding out you are between 2 tornado warned supercells…and you can’t see either of them for the trees!

Muenster, TX Exxon gas station coffee – a palate of crude oil with a hint of skunk & an overtone of aluminium

Going through some of the decrepit areas of Paris Texas…some places look really sad

stupid drivers who don’t move over for trucks merging onto freeways..with the attitude of ‘this is my lane – everybody else can get stuffed!!”

Best Western Ark City…..most fantastic bullshit excuse – “we have no tea because the truck hasn’t arrived this week” ,and the scrambled eggs that were the consistency of half dried concrete and were mouldy green in colour

Stormchasing through Tyler, TX – endless sets of traffic lights that appear to stay on red forever!

$4.10 for gas (87 0ctane) at Ansley

Days Inn McPherson, KS – breakfast…no bread, no jam, no milk, cold coffee, no hot water. Hotel stank of cigarette smoke…..

The Ugly….

squashed armadillos

dodgy hotel plumbing!

jam that sticks together like glue and can’t be spread on toast… just have to wrap your toast around it

Mid afternoon traffic jam in St Louis!!

the ‘sweet’ scent of skunk, feedlots, sugar mills…….

Thoughts Clyve Herbert / Jane ONeill

In the words of J K Rowling..... ” I just write what I wanted to write. I write what amuses me. It’s totally for myself. ” if you enjoy what I write, I'm delighted...if you don't...then I'm delighted..... I'm a retired business manager chasing storms and weather in Australia and the USA, photographing anything that takes my eye, and catching up on my reading from the last 23 years. I've finally got the chance to share my thoughts with the world.
